Dauphin Island West

O’Bryan worked in Mobile, Alabama for two months during the summer of 2018. As a family that is used to spending time together every day, the boys and I missed him a lot. Summers are busy for us because I work full time and the kids go to different camps each week. Our crazy schedule helps the time pass quickly, but weekends are for slowing down and reconnecting with each other. My previous post on Dauphin Island described our initial visit, and Trent and Robby were hooked after that. Every weekend they asked to go explore some more. Thankfully, our central location in Alabama means there are a lot of fun places nearby if you’re willing to do a little driving.

Dauphin Island is the southermost point of Alabama, three miles south of the Mobile Bay. Known as the “Sunset Capital of Alabama,” it’s a beautiful little island with white beaches and a strong marine culture. It’s only 14 miles long and 1.75 miles across at its widest point. We spent most of our first visit exploring the Mobile Bay side of the island, so this time we made sure to explore the other side on the Gulf of Mexico. There were huge waves that weekend, and we actually saw people surfing – something we had definitely never seen in the Gulf before.

Our Akitas love the water almost as much as our kids, and their grandma came along for a little fun at the beach too. As a side note, my oldest son Trent got a big cut on his knee at camp a few weeks before. He ended up scratching it and contracted impetigo. Basically, a skin infection that spreads easily and can lead to staph if not treated properly. We try our best to heal ailments naturally before introducing man-made options, so I researched and bought some high ranking UMF Manuka Honey. We applied liberally on his skin, usually before bed so it could soak in while he slept all night. I also mixed a spoonful with some hot water and lemon for him to drink. This did an amazing job combating the infection, but it wasn’t until we came back to the ocean that his last remaining sores totally disappeared. I thank God for his healing waters, and for babies that love the water more than the land!

Once again, spending time outdoors is so beneficial for our state of being. Sitting in the sand, watching my boys dive in the waves and swim after each other, I can’t help but be filled with gratitude. I pray that we continue to love each other, draw close to each other, and revel in the beauty of God’s amazing creation!
